Durham University Hill Orchestra

Durham University Hill Orchestra is one of the main orchestras at Durham University. It is unique in terms of its total inclusivity – the orchestra is completely non-auditioned and welcomes orchestral players of any level and experience. DUHO enjoys a relaxed and friendly approach to tackling exciting concert repertoire, ranging from classic film scores such as The Empire Strikes Back, E.T. and The Lord of the Rings to orchestral greats, including Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony and Sibelius’ Finlandia.

With a history of passionate and inspiring conductors, great concert opportunities in beautiful venues, yearly tours and fun and imaginative socials, DUHO offers the perfect way to keep the pleasure of orchestral music-making alive at Durham University.

President's Welcome

Welcome to Durham University Hill Orchestra! As Durham's only university-wide, non-auditioned orchestra, we pride ourselves on producing high standard performances whilst maintaining a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere for everyone. We perform a wide range of music from film and TV scores to traditional concert favourites. We also enjoy shining a light on lesser known composers and have even performed premiers of Durham student compositions.

With termly concerts, regular socials and the possibility of an annual tour, even if you haven't picked up your instrument in a while, come and give Hill Orchestra a try! We are commited to providing you with the best possible experience so follow us on our social media pages to stay up to date with all our plans for the year and keep an eye out for our stand at the University's Fresher's Fair. Feel free to send us an email if you have any questions about who we are or what we do.

We can't wait to meet you!

Lucy

Our Conductor

Isabel Gilchrist-Miller

I’m a 2nd year Maths student from Van Mildert and I’ll be conducting DUHO in 2022/2023. As conductor, I’d love you to become a member and help us produce some fantastic music together.

When not conducting, I’ll likely be found up a rock-climbing wall or performing in one of the various Durham dance societies!
