Durham University Hill Orchestra

Durham University Hill Orchestra is one of the main orchestras at Durham University. It is unique in terms of its total inclusivity – the orchestra is completely non-auditioned and welcomes orchestral players of any level and experience. DUHO enjoys a relaxed and friendly approach to tackling exciting concert repertoire, ranging from classic film scores such as The Empire Strikes Back, E.T. and The Lord of the Rings to orchestral greats, including Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony and Sibelius’ Finlandia.

With a history of passionate and inspiring conductors, great concert opportunities in beautiful venues, yearly tours and fun and imaginative socials, DUHO offers the perfect way to keep the pleasure of orchestral music-making alive at Durham University.

[Postponed] A Celebration of Female Composers: Durham and Beyond

The Durham University Hill Orchestra is proud to present the first Durham orchestral concert featuring works by only female composers! This includes the Suffolk Suite by Doreen Carwithen, three works by Durham student based composers that will be premiered on the night and Ina Boyle's recently uncovered symphony "Glencree" which has only been performed a handful of times.

Doors open at 7:30 and refreshments will be served during an interval, with all the proceeds going to the charity CoppaFeel!

President's Welcome

Welcome to Durham University Hill Orchestra! We are the only non-auditioned orchestra here at Durham and we pride ourselves on our high standard of playing, challenging music and creating an inclusive and sociable atmosphere for everyone. Previously we have performed a wide range of exciting rep from Film/TV music such as Game of Thrones to inspiring classical greats like Dvorak's New World Symphony and Parry's 'From Death to Life'. This year is by no means an exception as we have lots of exciting rep in store, ranging from The Polar Express to works by Leonard Bernstein!

We have concerts at least once a term as well as regular socials such as trips to concerts, group meals, film nights and bar crawls. Even if you haven't picked up your instrument for a while, come and give Hill Orchestra a try! We rehearse weekly, from 3-5.30pm every Saturday in Sir James Knott Hall, Trevelyan College and if you love performing music in a relaxed atmosphere, Hill Orchestra is perfect for you!

Visit us on our social media pages and at the Freshers Fair on 2nd and 3rd October to find out more and sign up!

Hope to see you at rehearsals!

Our conductor

Sam Read

I’m a 3rd year Music Undergraduate from Cuths and I’ll be conducting DUHO in 2019/20. As conductor, I’m excited to work with the orchestra on a plethora of repertoire, including that from lesser known composers.

When I’m not conducting, you can usually find me composing, playing in a ceilidh band, or drinking excessive amounts of coffee.

Join Us

If you're thinking of joining, you're welcome to come to one of our rehearsals to give it a go! We rehearse from 3:00 to 5:30 in the Sir James Knott Hall, Trevelyan College on Saturday afternoons. Alternatively, if you fancy becoming a member on a more permanent basis, membership of The Hill Orchestra is open to anyone at Durham University and costs just £12 per year. Being a member has many perks, such as discounted Hill Orchestra merchandise, biscuits at rehearsals, and recognition of your hard work through inclusion in the concert programmes.

Alternatively, if you have any questions, feel free to contact us at the society email address.
